NASA Astronauts Discover the Benefits of LED Light Therapy

The discovery of the healing benefits of LED light therapy by NASA astronauts is a fascinating example of serendipity in scientific research. While experimenting with infrared and near-infrared LED lights to promote plant growth aboard the space station, astronauts noticed an unexpected side effect: the lights also appeared to expedite the healing of their own wounds and improve skin conditions. Without gravity astronauts' wounds heal very slowly; yet when exposed to infrared light, this process sped up significantly.

By 1993, controlled experiments, to identify whether LED red and near infrared wavelengths were indeed the reason for improved health outcomes in astronauts, were well on their way. Fast forward 30 years and 4000 research studies later, there is sufficient scientific proof that near and infrared wavelengths enhance cellular regeneration and reduce inflammation. Wavelengths are absorbed through the skin into our cells. This in turn boosts the production of growth factor proteins, collagen and improves circulation.

We now also know that it is not only red LED light therapy that is advantageous for our cells.

  • Blue LED light eradicates bacteria on the skin and is therefore great for skin where there is an excessive production of sebum and resulting breakouts of pimples or acne.
  • Yellow LED light reduces redness, resulting in congestion of the capillaries;
  • Green LED light reduces pigmentation;
  • Purple LED light treats scars and reduces puffiness;
  • Cyan LED light calms and balances secretion of the cells in the skin;
  • White LED light improves fine lines as it breaks down old cells allowing new cells to the surface of the skin plumping it out.

Today, thanks to NASA astronauts and scientists, the benefits of LED light therapy are harnessed in various medical and cosmetic treatments on Earth, ranging from pain management to skin rejuvenation.
